THE SECRET OF CHOOSING THE RIGHT BLUSH AFTER 50
Blush as many other makeup products started with ancient Egyptians and has been around for thousands of years.
Even though the amounts and shades used most frequently might have changed over the years blush is an important step in every woman's makeup routine. Especially for those of us over 50.
Just like our hair loses color with age (grey hair), our skin starts to lose pigment. Our skin tone becomes more uneven, and our lips, eyes, and cheeks become less defined by losing their natural glow and radiance.
And when we hit menopause the coloring in our skin can change even more rapidly, because of the decreasing estrogen levels. And this is where blush can serve as a great help to you.
With the right shade and type of blush, your skin will look much younger and more vibrant.
Without further ado, here's how to choose blush for mature skin:
1. Powder or cream?
Even though the majority of blush in stores is powder it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s better for your skin. It’s the opposite for older women.
As you age your skin cells regenerate more slowly and because of it, it’s harder to maintain moisture. Your wrinkles and pores appear more prominent without proper hydration, and your skin becomes dry and irritated.
Therefore, liquid or cream blush in most cases will be the best choice. Hydration is key for mature skin. In addition, these formulas are less likely to settle into your fine lines and wrinkles.
Apply your cream blush with a stipple brush or by using your fingers. Apply a conservative amount of your cream or liquid blush and lightly blend upwards (towards the temples).
For very oily skin choose powder blush. But look for a formula that is designed for mature skin. Make sure the products that you use don't dehydrate skin as much.
2. With or without shimmer?
In the past, mature women were discouraged from wearing shimmer. Well, that’s not the case anymore.
If shimmer works for your skin type, don’t be afraid to use it! It can bring sallow skin back to life. Just don’t overdo it.
3. Best Color Blush for Mature Skin: Bright or Neutral?
More pigmented makeup products work best for mature skin. So, don’t be afraid of colors! Choose the right one for your skin tone and remember not to go overboard. You can always add another layer.
Some Extra Tips to Choosing Blush Over 50:
- If you have age-related redness or rosacea, always use a high coverage concealer and foundation before applying blush.
- Look for a formula with antioxidants. It will firm your skin.
- Blush products containing essential vitamins and minerals will help to keep your skin hydrated.
- Avoid products with alcohol and artificial fragrances. That can increase dryness and cause skin irritation.
- A cream blush with SPF is a great bonus to help protect your skin from the sun.
